Feeling Blue Never Tasted So Good: Our Very Official Ranking of 12 Blue Desserts

People ask us all the time: "Miss Emily, why is your signature color blue?" The short answer is that a very persuasive bee told us to. The slightly longer answer is that blue is the most underrated color in the dessert world, and somebody had to defend its honor.

So we did what any self-respecting dessert bar would do. We cleared a Saturday, brewed a pot of coffee, and taste-tested twelve blue treats in a single afternoon. Here are the results, ranked from "why" to "wow."

The Rules of the Hive

Every dessert was scored on three criteria, out of ten points each:

A perfect score is 30. Nobody got a perfect score. One thing got close.

The Rankings, From Bottom to Top

12. Blue Raspberry Candy (the neon kind) — Flavor: 4. Charm: 5. Bee-worthiness: 2. Total: 11. This is the color of a gas station slushie, and frankly, it knows it. Nostalgic? Sure. But it stained three fingers and one team member's soul.

11. Blue Corn Muffin — Flavor: 7. Charm: 5. Bee-worthiness: 5. Total: 17. A sleeper hit. The blue is subtle and honest — it comes from actual blue cornmeal, which we respect. It lost points only because half the team thought it was moldy. It was not. Probably.

10. Blue Velvet Cake — Flavor: 6. Charm: 7. Bee-worthiness: 4. Total: 17. Look, red velvet's cousin showed up to the family reunion dyed head to toe. It's fun, it's dramatic, but eating it feels slightly like a dare. Cream cheese frosting carried it.

9. Blueberry Yogurt Parfait — Flavor: 7. Charm: 6. Bee-worthiness: 6. Total: 19. Respectable, wholesome, and a little forgettable. The parfait of people who say "I'm just having a small dessert."

8. Blue Corn Tortilla Chocolate Bark — Flavor: 8. Charm: 5. Bee-worthiness: 6. Total: 19. Weirdly great. Salty, crunchy, dramatic. Lost charm points because nobody could explain it to their kids.

7. Blue M&M Cookies — Flavor: 7. Charm: 8. Bee-worthiness: 5. Total: 20. The kids-on-the-team (okay, the young-at-heart team members) went feral for these. Classic chocolate chip dough, blue candy-coated chocolates pressed in. Simple joy in a chewy round.

6. Butterfly Pea Flower Shortbread — Flavor: 6. Charm: 9. Bee-worthiness: 7. Total: 22. These delicate lavender-blue cookies are the most photogenic thing we've ever put on a plate. The flavor is mild — think faintly floral, faintly vanilla — but the color is 100% natural, which our bees appreciated.

5. Blueberry Lemon Bars — Flavor: 9. Charm: 7. Bee-worthiness: 7. Total: 23. Tangy, jammy, and the blueberry swirl made a marble pattern that got an actual "ooooh" from the room. A strong mid-pack contender with a bright future.

4. Blue Cornflower Honey Cake — Flavor: 8. Charm: 8. Bee-worthiness: 9. Total: 25. We may be biased — this one's on our own menu — but honey in a honey bee's taste test felt like a fair flex. Moist, floral, and gently sweet. The bees have not stopped buzzing about it.

3. Blueberry Cobbler with Vanilla Ice Cream — Flavor: 9. Charm: 8. Bee-worthiness: 8. Total: 25. A tie on points, but the cobbler wins the tiebreaker for making everyone in the room say "oh, RIGHT" at the same time. Warm, bubbling, straight-outta-the-oven comfort. This is what blue food wants to be when it grows up.

2. Blueberry Cheesecake Bars — Flavor: 10. Charm: 8. Bee-worthiness: 8. Total: 26. Creamy, tangy, with a deep purple-blue blueberry compote swirled on top like a storm system over the prairie. One judge wrote only: "I have no notes."

1. Fresh Blueberry Pie with Lattice Crust — Flavor: 10. Charm: 9. Bee-worthiness: 9. Total: 28. The champion. It's blue because of actual fruit, not dye. It tastes like a July afternoon somewhere in Vermont. It made the loudest team member go quiet. If blue desserts held a pageant, this one would take the sash and the crown and probably give a tearful acceptance speech.

A Quick Word From the Bees

Here's the thing we learned: the best blue desserts aren't blue because of a bottle of dye. They're blue because blueberries showed up and did the work. Nature got there first, and honestly, nature's version tastes better.

That's the spirit behind Miss Emily's Blue Bee Bar — a little whimsy, a lot of real ingredients, and a signature color we chose because it makes people smile before they've even taken a bite.

Run Your Own Taste Test at Home

Want to settle the blue debate at your kitchen table? Print our scorecard, line up three to five blue treats (store-bought is fine — we don't judge), and have everyone rate each one on flavor, charm, and bee-worthiness.

Your printable scorecard:

MISS EMILY'S BLUE BEE TASTE TEST
Treat: ________________________
Flavor (1–10): ______________
Charm (1–10): ______________
Bee-worthiness (1–10): _____

Tally the totals, crown a winner, and — this part is mandatory — argue passionately about the results. That's half the fun.

And if your family's taste test inspires a blue dessert craving you can't shake, well. You know where the Blue Bee Bar is. We'll keep the honey cake warm.

Until next time: stay sweet, stay curious, and never trust a blue dessert that won't tell you where its color came from.
